Martin Martinez grew up in a rough and unpredictable neighborhood, regularly surrounded by the daily challenges of drugs, alcohol, and crime. His life took a pivotal turn when his mother relocated Martin and his siblings to a safer environment to give them an opportunity to build a better future. Martin would then take this opportunity to commit himself to walking a different path, choosing discipline, integrity, and responsibility as guiding principles, and working hard in school. He helped to support his family, and became a role model for others in his community who faced similar struggles that he knew all too well.

The journey was not without hardships. Martin witnessed friends and loved ones fall victim to destructive choices, and he himself had moments where the influence of the streets threatened to pull him off course. Reflecting on those times, Martin often shares, “No one is perfect… but I know how the streets and hard times can affect someone's choices and outcome in life, as it got me a few times. But I was not going to let that ruin my future or change my true love for life in doing right. I did not want the streets to influence my family—especially my children.”

 

It was that very resilience and determination that became the cornerstone of Martin’s life’s work: helping others. He has devoted countless hours to serving at St. Paul’s Mission and The Darlene Johnson Foundation in San Diego, Los Angeles, Moreno Valley and surrounding communities.  Martin supports the underprivileged and elderly, while also mentoring youth facing difficult circumstances. His message is simple but powerful—that kindness, compassion, and better choices can change lives.

Today, Martin is recognized as a true humanitarian who leads by example. His dedication to service and his belief in treating all people with dignity and respect align closely with the mission of the Darlene Johnson Foundation. By bringing his life experience, compassion, and relentless commitment to helping others, Martin plays a vital role in advancing the foundation’s vision of hope, resilience, and empowerment.
